Introduction

Rebozo Closing Ceremony is a postpartum healing ceremony, which was created to nurture the mother after her passage through the extremely opening experience of pregnancy, labor and childbirth (during which a woman allows another soul to take birth through her). It helps a woman to find her own self and centre again and allows her to be sealed back into herself.

It is inspired by a Mexican tradition where the postpartum mother is anointed and wrapped in the Mayan tradition. There is a calling of her spirit back to herself as she has been a portal for carrying new life, and has walked the threshold between worlds. A transformation has also begun as the mother embraces new aspects of herself through this rite of passage into new stages of motherhood. Our intention is to provide a space as a nurturing and supportive environment in which healing can take place on these many levels.

During the Ceremony...

The ceremony begins with a short introduction and an offering towards creating personal intention. Mom will then be comfortably situated on bed, when a ‘closing’ will be done by wrapping rebozos around seven points along the mother’s body (including the cranium, the midsection, and the pelvic area). Once the wrapping is complete, she is allowed to lie quietly and integrate her experience. A variety of healing modalities may be used involving reiki, aromatherapy, and sound healing. Mom’s body will give us the cue on when it is ready to be unwrapped.

The Benefits of the Ceremony

This process literally helps "close" a Mother's body, which "opens" in so many ways, in preparation for, during birth itself, and in the embarking into motherhood.

Not only it helps facilitate a physical shrinkage of the uterus, and guide the bones back to their original positioning, but also helps "close" a new Mother energetically, as both pregnancy, and particularly the intense process of labor and birth, can be very vulnerable times for a woman, psychologically and psychically

How to prepare for the Ceremony

Wear comfortable cloths

Try to feed your baby just before the ceremony and have someone to take care of her/him during the ceremony, if needed.

I will bring some meditative background music to be played in the background. If you wish, you can prepare for your own music.

You may want to choose one or more close friends or relatives to join in the ceremony and together, we become the support that “hold the space” for you.
